The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is important for several reasons, due to his pioneering position in a series that would later include: morrowind† Forgetfulness and Skyrim to the fact that it was a Game of the Year winner in its own right. The point is, the game is a 1996 3D adventure, and it sucks to play it in 2022.
Not through your own fault! It’s just that early 3D games didn’t have the same universal smoothness and freedom of movement that we associate more modern titles with, and so anyone more familiar with the series’ later games is trying to play. Daggerfall would now have a struggle.
Or they would be if they tried to play the original 1996 release (above). What they could do instead is play it great Daggerfall Unity – GOG Cut, which has just reached Good Old Games. It is not an official Bethesda release; rather, it’s the work of a team of modders who packed the whole thing together for storefront release:
Play an updated version of the all-time RPG classic from The Elder Scrolls series. Daggerfall Unity – GOG Cut brings this amazing experience to modern gamers. It was made possible thanks to a whole team of passionate creators working under the banner of Daggerfall Unity.
Launched over a decade ago by Gavin “Interkarma” Clayton, this ambitious project aims to bring the unique experience of the classic open-world RPG game to a new generation of gamers. Thanks to the efforts of GamerZakh, a game content creator with a penchant for classics, you can now enjoy a special GOG Cut of the Daggerfall Unity title.
All you need to do is download the game and just launch it. The GOG Cut or Daggerfall Unity does not require any special actions or updates on your behalf. Settings and mods selected by GamerZakh allow you to explore the rich world of Daggerfall with enhanced visuals and gameplay.
Some of the specifics of this bundled remaster of the game are some high-resolution images (completely recreated in Unity, hence the name, but whether they are a improvement under discussion) with new lighting, much longer drawing distances, support for mods and most importantly some quality of life tweaks including smoother first-person controls.
You can download the pack for free and see the full list of affected modders on GOG’s site.
