Two people were killed and a third injured in a shooting at a church in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday evening. A suspect, who has not been named, is in custody.
Vestavia Hills police said they received a call from an active gunman at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church at about 6:22 p.m. local time.
On Thursday evening, police reported Capt. Shane Ware of Vestavia Hills that a total of three people had been shot. Two of them have died and a third is being treated in a hospital.
According to Waren, the suspect entered the church during a group meeting and opened fire. The church had posted on its website that it was holding a potluck between 5 and 7 p.m.
Ware did not provide a possible motive or further details about the circumstances of the shooting, although he said police believe there is no further threat to the community. It has not been disclosed how the suspect was arrested.
The FBI and the US Marshals Service were among several federal and local agencies that assisted in the investigation.
