2 dead in mass shooting in Norway; more than a dozen injured

OSLO, Norway (AP) – A mass shooting in Oslo killed two people and injured more than a dozen on Saturday morning, Norwegian police said, as the city geared up for an annual Pride parade.

The shooting took place outside a bar in the center of the Norwegian capital, police said.

A suspect has been arrested and police do not believe other people were involved, police spokesman Tore Barstad said.

Barstad said the motive was not immediately known and it was not clear whether the shooting had anything to do with the Pride parade to be held in Oslo on Saturday.

“Police are in contact with the organizers of the Pride event next Saturday. There will be ongoing assessments of what measures the police need to take to protect that event and whether this incident has anything to do with Pride at all,” Barstad told reporters.

He said 14 people received medical treatment, eight of whom have been hospitalized.

Olav Roenneberg, a journalist for the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, said he witnessed the shooting.

“I saw a man arrive with a bag. He grabbed a weapon and started shooting,” Roenneberg told NRK. “At first I thought it was an air pistol. Then the glass of the bar next door broke and I realized I had to take cover.”

Norwegian broadcaster TV2 showed images of people running in panic through the streets of Oslo as shots rang out in the background.

The organizers of the Oslo Pride said they were in close contact with the police.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic incident, and we are following it closely,” Oslo Pride said in a Facebook statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Norway is a relatively safe country but has suffered violent attacks by right-wing extremists, including one of the worst mass shootings in Europe in 2011, when a right-wing extremist killed 69 people on the island of Utoya after detonating a bomb in Oslo that eight people were killed.

In 2019, another right-wing extremist killed his stepsister and then opened fire at a mosque, but was overpowered before anyone was injured there.
