20 beaches of Gibraltar to relax in 2022

Gibraltar is a small British Overseas Territory on the border of Spain. The area’s main activities center around the Rock of Gibraltar, the striking limestone promontory that juts out into the Strait of Gibraltar. But the beaches of Gibraltar should not be overlooked when visiting this incredible and unusual piece of land. As a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar has a large port serving both cruise ships and merchant ships, but the rest of the coastline has small beaches and coves.

Although there are less than 10 beaches in Gibraltar, they are well looked after and spending time on the beach is one of the things to do in Gibraltar in the summer. Because the area is so small, Gibraltar’s beaches are easily accessible by bus or on foot, depending on the location of your hotel. Many hotels in Gibraltar are close to Casemates Square, except for the newly built Holiday Inn close to the airport and Eastern Beach and the Caleta, which overlooks the Catalan Bay.

The beaches of Gibraltar fill up with tanned bodies during the warm summer months, but during the low season the beaches of Gibraltar are still worth a visit. The beaches will be much quieter, but keep in mind that some restaurants are only open daily in high season, so check online or call ahead before planning a meal if you decide not to visit in the summer.

Beaches of Gibraltar

If you’re looking for the best beaches in Gibraltar you don’t have to travel far as they are all quite close together.

20 beaches in Gibraltar to escape to

1- Camp Bay

Parson’s Lodge Battery overlooks Camp Bay.

Known locally in the Gibraltan dialect Llanito as El Quarry, Camp Bay overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

The bay has crystal clear waters with almost no water pollution.

Camp Bay is not a sandy beach but a rocky beach.

The bay has spectacular views over Parsons Lodge Battery and towards Spain across the Bay of Gibraltar.

While relaxing in Camp Bay, watch the flurry of ships entering the Mediterranean or ships ready to dock in the nearby ports.

Camp Bay also has two swimming pools, one large for many swimmers to use at once and a smaller one suitable for children.

Camp Bay is home to Europe’s largest man-made reef, created when a group of activists won the right to sink a ship in shallow water instead of traditional deep water.

This allowed marine life to grow and has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

There are 11 wrecks in Camp Bay, so pack your snorkel to explore this beautiful underwater world.

Camp Bay is on the West Coast, Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

2- Small Bay

One of the best beaches in Gibraltar is a natural pool at the foot of the mountain.

Next to Camp Bay is Little Bay. As the name suggests, it is smaller in size but no less beautiful.

Little Bay is located in a natural bay on the south side of Camp Bay and has a swimming pool suitable for young children.

From the cliff face above Little Bay, a man-made waterfall plunges down into the ocean, carrying salt water from a water desalination plant back to the sea.

This is the only source of fresh water in the area.

Like its sister bay, Little Bay also has shipwrecks that have been transformed into reefs.

With three wrecks sunk at least 20 years ago, Little Bay’s artificial reef has created a sanctuary for soft corals, sponges, octopuses, fish and lobsters.

There is a popular bar and restaurant between Camp Bay and Little Bay with a large seating area.

Little Bay is at Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

3- Catalan Bay

Located between Eastern Beach and Sandy Bay is Catalan Bay and Beach, a beautiful stretch of sandy beach.

Catalan Bay is the second largest sandy beach in Gibraltar.

The beach is bordered by bright and colorful houses and is close to a very popular seafood restaurant.

The bay has served as a fishing village for centuries and was mainly populated by Genoese fishermen.

In the fall, the beach is covered with an array of shells.

The Caleta Hotel overlooks the bay and offers fantastic sea views.

In September, Catalan Bay sees a procession to the beach in front of the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Residents carry the statue of the Lady of Sorrows to the waterfront before the bishop blesses the sea.

Catalan Bay is located on Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

4- Eastern Beach

Eastern Beach is very popular during the summer months thanks to its stretches of golden sand and calm blue waters.

It is the largest of Gibraltar’s beaches and runs from Catalan Bay to the runway of Gibraltar International Airport.

Being so close to the runway, it has a unique view of planes taking off and landing on this unusual and short runway.

Awe-inspiring views of the rock can be seen from certain angles on the beach.

This Gibraltar beach has two bars, restaurants and a children’s play area.

Eastern Beach is located in Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

5- West Beach

Western Beach is the only sandy beach on the west side of the Rock.

The northern end of the beach shares the Spanish border and the Gibraltar International Airport runway adjoins the southern end.

The beach, like Eastern Beach, is popular with families and sunbathers and those who want to watch the planes take off or land.

Historically, the beach was only used by MOD (Ministry of Defence) families stationed on the Rock, but it is now completely open to the public.

This beach in Gibraltar is much quieter during the summer months than the beaches on the east side of the Rock.

Visit the small chiringuito, a small restaurant and bar, where you can dine on locally sourced seafood and tapas.

Western Beach is located in Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

6- Sand Bay

If you walk south from Catalan Bay along Sir Herbert Miles Road, you will come to Sandy Bay Beach, a man-made beach.

The beach is overlooked by the aptly named ‘Both Worlds’ properties on the estate, and Sandy Bay is the southernmost of the beaches along Gibraltar’s eastern edge.

The beach is picturesque and quiet due to its location.

Unfortunately, the shape of the beach and the effects of climate change have caused the beach to experience a lot of erosion and sand loss.

To counter this, the HM Government of Gibraltar constructed two groynes from large rocks to protect the bay, and added 80,000 tons of sand from the Sahara to prevent complete loss.

Dine in Sandy Bay at Kokonut, an excellent beach restaurant in the middle of the bay.

Sandy Bay is located at 34 Sir Herbert Miles Road, Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

7- Blackstrap Cove

Blackstrap Cove is a must-visit coastal location in Gibraltar, and while it doesn’t have a sandy beach, this iconic cove is well worth a visit.

The bay is close to Catalan Bay and Princess Royal’s Battery.

Tucked away on the Mediterranean coast, Blackstrap Cove was an infamous landing place for smugglers of rum, whiskey, tobacco and wine.

Ships wishing to trade with Europe, the UK and the New World had to wait by the bay for the east winds of the Levante to die down so they could pass safely through the Strait of Gibraltar.

The waiting ships called this ‘blackband’, which gave the bay its name.

The bay is so iconic that the Gibraltar Distillery Company named a whiskey after it.

Black Strap Cove is located at 2 Sir Herbert Miles Road, Gibraltar, GX11 1AA.

Gibraltar shares a border with Spain.
