Melbourne vs Port Adelaide Betting Tips

TIO Traeger Park, Sunday 17 July, 15:20 AEST

Melbourne Demons

Injuries: Blake Howes, Tom McDonald, Clayton Oliver, Deakyn Smith, Joel Smith, Daniel Turner

Melbourne has only a few players on the injury list, but one of them is arguably the best player in the league in Clayton Oliver. He will miss this week due to a broken thumb that he injured against the Cats last weekend. Tom McDonald is the only other player in their best 22 unable to enter the park due to an ankle injury.

The Demons were thoroughly outplayed in their game against the Cats last weekend, losing by 28 points after trailing wire-to-wire. The 91 points they allowed were the second highest of the season, most of which were 94 against the Dockers in round 11. Worryingly, the Demons have now lost four of their last six games after starting the season with a perfect 10 -0 record . Their depth in midfield will be tested this weekend in Oliver’s absence and it will be interesting to see who gets most of those key minutes around football.

Port Adelaide Power

Injuries: Trent Dumont, Orazio Fantasia, Lachie Jones, Jake Pasini, Josh Sinn, Brynn Teakle

Port Adelaide also has a relatively healthy roster with just six unselectable players. The biggest among them is probably Orazio Fantasia who continues to nurse a sore quad. Mid-season conscript Brynn Teakle is another one they would love to have running around with the seniors to fill the noticeable void in the ruck position.

The Power’s season looked to be over before it started as they started losing in each of their first five matches, although impressive form from round 6 has given them some life. They were way too good for the Giants last weekend when they won by 55 points, making it six straight wins on their home deck. The Power is now 8-8 and only one game outside the top eight.

Match Prediction

The Demons defeated the Power by five goals when they met in early April, making it two wins in a row in this game. The Power have certainly improved a lot since that defeat and have kept their small hopes of the final alive with wins in eight of their last 11 games, which is a better record than the Demons over the same period. Plus, the Power get a peek at the Demons at the neutral location in TIO Traeger Park, leveling the playing field even further. All things considered, I like the Power to be really competitive in this match and to cover the small spread.

Port Adelaide Power +10.5 (1 unit)

Prop Bets

Kane Farrell continues to show why he is one of the best kickers in the league with nearly a weekly out-of-50 goal. He has kicked at least one in eight out of ten games this season and continues to be of good quality.

These teams combined only clinched 104 points when they met earlier in the season, and it was no big surprise given the low scoring cases they’ve played in recent years. The current line of 155.5 has not been surpassed in any of their last seven meetings and I expect that streak to continue.
