4 people injured by man in New Zealand stabbing

WELLINGTON: Four people were injured on Thursday (June 23) after a man stabbed in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, authorities said.

Local media reported that the incident took place in Murrays Bay and neighboring Mairangi Bay on the city’s north coast.

Police District Superintendent Naila Hassan said the suspect in the attack had “a fairly large” knife and was in custody.

“This was an extremely rapid incident, with our police personnel responding quickly, arresting the perpetrator and preventing further damage to our communities,” Hassan said.

Hassan also praised members of the public who “acted with extreme courage,” according to New Zealand’s 1News.

“A number of members of the public followed him and eventually one of them intervened as he approached (Mairangi) Bay,” she said at a news conference.

“They have apprehended this perpetrator and brought the incident to an end.”

She also confirmed reports that a member of the public had used a crutch to hold the man down.

The New Zealand Herald reported that the man is now in hospital with moderate injuries.

A motive for the attack was not immediately clear.
