A Parent’s Guide to Childhood COVID-19 Vaccines

AAll children 6 months and older are now eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reviewed studies by vaccine makers Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech and unanimously found the injections to be safe and effective for children.

Vaccine efficacy varies between companies and between different age groups. There are a number of reasons for this: the trials were conducted over waves of different variants, trials for children were relatively small, and very few children tested positive for COVID-19 in the short period of time they were studied. The studies also looked at a variety of outcomes, with some focusing on COVID-19 infections as a measure of vaccine efficacy, while others focused on symptoms of severe illness and hospitalization. The bottom line is that both mRNA vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective against serious diseases in all age groups.

Parents looking to vaccinate their young children must now make decisions, and figuring out when to vaccinate their children — and which vaccine — can be confusing.

Here’s a visual guide to understanding the similarities and differences between the vaccines.
