AFL Top 100: Round 13 (Part 3)

Saturday’s shootout between Greater Western Sydney and Western Bulldogs provided not only a great demonstration of the skills of AFL football, but also the highest overall match score since Round 7, 2021.

The Bulldogs missed their highest score against the Giants by one point (round 22, 2019) and showed they still have the firepower to shape the last eight.

While they are still a game behind in 10th place, they have a superior percentage to the five teams currently above them – a handy advantage in what seems likely to be a close battle for positions 5 to 8 in the last 10 rounds.

As you would expect in a 35-goal game, some milestones were reached: Coby Weightman, the Bulldogs dynamic striker, scored five goals in the first half of the game.

His fifth goal was his 50th goal in AFL football and suggested that this first-round draft pick, who was a Rising Star nominee and got one vote in the Brownlow Medal last year, will be an almost certain qualifier for the top 100 goal. kicker status with the Bulldogs this year or next.

He finished the game with five goals and a dislocated elbow that will hopefully not cause the loss of too many (if any) games.

Aaron Naughton also scored five goals and continued his steady climb up the Bulldogs’ list of goals, passing now Geelong player Shaun Higgins, former coach Don McKenzie, Bernie O’Brien – who played a year at Carlton at center from his career with the Bulldogs ending in 1938 – and Ryan Griffin, who left the club in 2015 under controversial circumstances for Greater Western Sydney.

Naughton’s rapid climb up the goal kick list means he will now have two famous names in his sights: Ted Whitten junior and Barry Hall.

Speaking of controversial, Greater Western Sydney’s Toby Greene kicked a personal best of seven goals, including his 250th goal. Greene is by far the Giants’ second-best goalscorer, but still falls 175 goals behind now Geelong-based Jeremy Cameron.

At the age of 28, he seems to be able to bridge this gap. All of GWS’s other goalscorers are already in the club’s top 100 goalscorers.

From a games perspective, Adam Kennedy equaled now Melbourne-based Adam Tomlinson as the 10th best gamer with the Giants.

In the Western Bulldogs, the talented and extremely hard-working Jack Macrae moves towards the 200-game mark, passing Brian Lake and matching Liam Picken in 198 games. GWS introduced ex-Foster player Ryan Angwin to AFL football. Angwin was the Giants’ pick at 18 in the 2020 draft.

In the final game of Round 13, Jarrod Witts equaled the match total at Gold Coast or Dion Prestia, who left the club six years ago to play for Richmond. The following year, Witts joined the Suns after four years at Collingwood.

The two players were born within a month of each other nearly 30 years ago, reaching the total of 95 matches with the same number of wins (26), suggesting that no progress has been made in the Witts era compared to the Prestia era .

However, I would suggest that – as their win over Adelaide puts them in 11th position, only one of eight games outperforming fellow contenders Collingwood and Port Adelaide – this would be the Gold Coast Suns’ best season ever.

The Suns have never finished higher than 12th, so the next 10 games should tell a story.
