More than 40 graduates of Alvord schools share $52,000 in scholarship money.
The Alvord Educational Foundation presented the awards to 42 graduates of Hillcrest, La Sierra, and Norte Vista high schools during ceremonies at each school.
This year, scholarship amounts rose from $250 to $500 with awards of $750, $1,000 and $1,500 for outstanding academic achievement, a press release said. Two $2,000 scholarships were awarded to students with excellent grades who wish to become teachers.
Two $2,500 scholarships went to students with outstanding community service and excellence in academics.
Two $1,000 “Giving Back” scholarships were funded by two La Sierra alumni and awarded to two La Sierra graduates, according to the release. These unnamed donors paid for the grants to thank their teachers, counselors, coaches, and advisors.
The foundation supports education in the Alvord Unified School District, which serves the western Riverside areas and part of Corona.
