Amber Heard Says The Therapist’s Notes Would Have Made A Difference – Deadline

Amber Heard said she believes her doctor’s notes reporting alleged abuse by Johnny Depp would have made a difference in the jury’s decision in her ex-husband’s libel case. However, the notes were excluded from the six-week trial.

In the final excerpt of her interview with NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie, broadcast on date line on Friday, Heard said her doctor’s notes are a record of what she was talking about in real time, going back to the beginning of her relationship with Depp.

Guthrie said they went through the notes and they showed that “Amber spoke of physical abuse as early as 2012. In January of that year, she told her therapist that Depp hit her and threw her to the ground. Eight months later, he tore her. nightgown, threw her on the bed and in 2013 he threw her against a wall and threatened to kill her.”

Heard’s attorneys also showed text messages from NBC News that had been barred from the trial, including one in which she wrote to her father, “He kicked me in front of everyone.” That message was related to a controversial incident in which Heard claimed that Depp kicked her on a private plane.

Depp denies Heard’s allegations of physical abuse. A Depp spokesperson told the network: “It is unfortunate that the defendant and her team are repeating and rethinking and re-initiating the cases already decided by the court.”

A jury awarded Depp $15 million in his libel suit against Heard, finding her liable for defamation after publishing a 2018 article in The Washington Post in which she said she had “become a public figure dealing with domestic violence.” represents”. The judge quickly reduced the amount to $10.35 million, based on the state limit on punitive damages. Heard also won a verdict, as the jury found Depp liable for libel over a statement made by his attorney. But Heard’s prize was only $2 million.

Heard’s interview with Guthrie was her first post-trial interview, and NBC News maximized publicity for his exclusive, broadcasting it in two parts on Today earlier this week followed by the hour of date line

The date line episode featured portions of Guthrie’s interview that had already aired, but the hour may have shed some light on why Heard agreed to do it, as it gave her another chance to tell her side of the story. But it was a version of events that the jury found unconvincing.

“They thought you were lying,” Guthrie told Heard.

She replied, ‘I’ll put it this way: how could they pass judgment, how could they not come to that conclusion? They had sat in those chairs and heard relentless testimonials from paid employees for over three weeks nonstop and by the end of the trial, randos, as I said.”

“I don’t blame you” [the jury]† …I actually understand that he is a beloved character and people feel like they know him. He’s a fantastic actor… After listening to three and a half weeks of testimony about how I was an incredible person, not to believe a word that came out of my mouth. I am a hysterical woman. I’m crazy. I can’t be trusted again and again.”

Heard defended the opinion underlying the defamation charge, arguing that it was not about her relationship with Depp, but the issue of domestic violence and legislative reform. But when asked by Guthrie why she would write something that would rekindle the couple’s relationship, given their divorce settlement, Heard acknowledged that this was a point that “I wish it was considered more seriously.”

A judge appeared on Good morning America earlier this week, saying Heard “didn’t seem credible”. She claimed that she did not provoke any physical fights, but that audio was played during the process in which she admitted to starting one.

“I know a lot of these tapes were made,” Heard told Guthrie. “And as I testified in the stands, what you hear in those clips is not proof of what happened. It was proof of a negotiation, of how to talk about that with your abuser.’

Guthrie asked Heard, “He said he never hit you. Is that a lie?” “Yes,” Heard said.

Guthrie noted that no other women have come forward with claims against Depp.

“Look what happened to me when I came forward. Would you?” Heard responded.

Guthrie also highlighted another aspect of Depp’s case: photos showing Heard looking “undamaged” after the alleged abuse. Heard testified that some of the photos were taken days and even weeks after the alleged injuries, Guthrie noted.

“What I learned in that trial is that it’s never going to be good enough,” Heard said. “If you have proof, then it was a plan. It was a hoax. if you don’t have proof, it didn’t happen. If you have a bruise, it’s fake. If you don’t have a bruise, then violence obviously didn’t hurt you. If you’ve told people, you’re hysterical. If you didn’t tell anyone, it didn’t happen.”

She told Guthrie she hopes the outcome “didn’t have the chilling effect it could have on other people.” I worry about that. But if I can look you in the eye, Savannah, and say, “I’m still here,” and maybe that will help balance out some of the very. very real fear that others may have to come forward or speak out.”

Heard said she would stand “by every word of my testimony” until her “dying day.”

“My goal, all I can hope for right now, I just want people to see me as a human being,” she said.
