Bulldogs CEO says “pretty progress” is being made on the midfielder’s contract

Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Baines says “pretty progress” is being made on a deal to re-sign midfielder Bailey Smith after this season.

Smith is currently sidelined for a while after receiving a two-game suspension for illegal drug use last week at the end of last year, on top of a two-game suspension for a headbutt against Geelong in round 12.

Speaking publicly for the first time since Smith’s ban was issued, Baines stressed that it was critical to acknowledge that Smith was taking illegal drugs in the weeks following the loss of the club’s grand final last year and not had in 2022.

“The most important thing is that the incident was from last year,” he continued Sports day

“While the club didn’t know about the existence of a vision until last week, the period that Bailey (Smith) was dealing with and leading to the poor decision-making was something we knew at the time and we were dealing with had.

“To his credit, he’s done a lot of things over the last six to eight months to deal with that and his performance on the pitch has reflected that.

“We’ve made quite some progress with his manager Paul Connors over the last 2-3 weeks (with his contract after 2022) so hopefully that momentum can continue.”

Smith has played a starring role in the club’s season so far this year, averaging 31 disposals and four points.

The 22-year-old will be available for selection again in Round 18.
