Fever, Other Safety Considerations
Pain was the most common local reaction reported in children up to 5 years of age in the Moderna vaccine study. Most symptoms were mild and lasted 23 to 3 days. In terms of systemic side effects, fever, irritability, crying, somnolence and loss of appetite were most common in the 6 months to less than 2 years old group. In the 2- to 5-year-old children, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and chills were most common.
There was one attack caused by fever reported 3 days after a first dose, a reaction the study investigator said was related to the vaccine in the Moderna study. “About 6 weeks later, the child has remained in the study and has received two doses of the vaccine without” [further] events.”
No cases of myocarditis or death were reported in the Moderna or Pfizer studies.
Pain or tenderness at the injection site were the most common local reactions in the Pfizer study. In terms of systemic reactions, irritability and somnolence were more common in children aged 6 months to less than 2 years. Fatigue was most common in children aged 2 to 4. Most symptoms were mild and resolved within 1 to 2 days.
Fever was also reported in the Pfizer study, most lasting about 1 day.
