Charlotte Tilbury on creating a “quintessentially British” makeup collection for the Queen’s Jubilee

It all starts with the matriarchy. When makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury looks back on her earliest pearls of beauty wisdom, she quickly writes “my wonderful mother” patsy.Tilbury grew up in bohemian Ibiza in a British expat family, Tilbury recalls.[sitting], mesmerized, watching my mom’s morning and evening beauty routines.” The flame-haired little girl learned the importance of a good skin cream — the key to restoring hydration that may have been compromised by the beach or a late-night dance. (At an age when other kids might be making their dolls, Tilbury went to nightclubs where Grace Jones or James Brown might play.) Just as important was a swipe of face-brightening color: “Happiness in a tube,” Patsy called her lipstick de rigueur. It was as much a shock of confidence as it was a passport to a promising future: “‘It takes you everywhere!’” says the makeup artist, citing the oracle.

In Tilbury’s case, that road to success was a glittering one. Over the decades, she’s oversaw the makeup looks for high-profile runway shows (Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Chloé) and painted the faces of women who defined the era, including Kate Moss, Amal Clooney, and Penelope Cruz. She launched her eponymous cosmetics brand in 2013, cementing her approach to all-day glamour: “desk, dusk, disco,” Tilbury once told Fashion† In addition to those career awards came recognition from Queen Elizabeth herself. “Honey, receiving my MBE from the Queen in 2018 for services to the beauty and cosmetics industry was such an honor, and one of the most magical days of my life!” says Tilbury, still tense. Four years later, her brand returns that support as the official beauty sponsor of the Platinum Jubilee, celebrating the monarch’s 70th anniversary on the throne. The eagle-eyed among us will even see Tilbury swan in the procession this Sunday, clutching her new crimson velvet makeup bag as a clutch.

“Lipstick is instant glamour, and Her Majesty The Queen has always used that soft power to create her iconic image,” says Tilbury, perceptive of the levers of influence. She points to the monarch’s keen eye for color, as seen in a rainbow of skirt suits and matching hats, as well as the ribbon of pigment on an otherwise naturalistic face. Tilbury pays tribute to that signature makeup look with a limited-edition trio of Jubilee lipsticks, each designed to amplify “everyone, everywhere.” The shade aptly called The Queen is a “quintessential British cerise pink,” she says, teasing an arsenal of influences, from the Crown Jewels to the Union Jack flag. Dainty Pink nods to royal icons of the past (although you can imagine that.) Kate Middleton feel right at home in the shade, given the cheerful shine). And Runway Royalty comes straight from Tilbury’s very own highlight reel. It’s a “homage to the queens of ’90s catwalks — from Kate to Naomi to Christy,” Tilbury says. “I can’t give away all my secrets yet, but some of them will join me at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant celebrations!”

The festivities wouldn’t be complete without the makeup artist’s signature gem, Magic Cream. (Originally based on her grandmother’s recipe, the moisturizer earned its name on set when, in search of that dewy, plumping effect, her collaborators asked, “Where’s that secret magic cream?”) Best-selling version now recorded in The Jubilee Collection has been refined for maximum efficacy, so much so that Tilbury—an exuberant, charismatic pitch woman—calls it her “famous instant turnaround cream”: You’ll see results in 28 seconds, 28 days.

The cult-favorite product is easy to imagine as an accessory to the throne: a scepter in one hand, a faceted pot in the other. After all, Elizabeth II is known for her longevity, both in her youthful countenance and in her dominion over history-making. “Over the past seven decades we have seen the most incredible transformation in the way we live our lives and the opportunities available to women, and through it all, our Queen has embraced change, captured our hearts and led our country with pride” Tilbury says, pointing to the monarch’s compassion and forward-looking vision for generations to come. “It’s so important to me to honor the women in power who paved the way for us, and to inspire those to come.”
