Something to look forward to: Good news for fans of violent action movies from the 80s (and 90s): publisher Nacon has announced that new games featuring Robocop and the Terminator are in development. In the case of the former, original star Peter Weller will reprise his role as Detroit’s cyborg cop who loves nothing more than shooting criminals in the groin.
The Robocop: Rogue City trailer gives us a glimpse into the FPS due out next June for PC, PS5 and XBOX Series X/S. There are many nods to the original movie in the gameplay clip, including Robocop’s lock-on targeting overlay, ED-209, and the “can you fly?” line first used by villain Clarence Boddicker. We also get a glimpse into Weller’s digital incarnation as he utters the famous quote “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me”.
“NACON and Teyon have teamed up with MGM to develop an authentic RoboCop gaming experience that is true to the DNA of the franchise, while immersing gamers in an original story that allows them to play as none other than RoboCop itself,” wrote Teyon Games, the company behind Terminator: Resistance (but not the upcoming Terminator game).
There have been several Robocop video games over the years, although the only ones this writer remembers were the 1980s arcade cabinet platformer and the Amiga version.
Joining Robocop will be a separate Terminator title, the one created by Rims Racing developer Nacon Studio Milan. It’s an open-world survival game that takes place after the events of Judgment Day, so you’ll probably be hiding from the T-800s and other machines instead of controlling them.
No word on when the Terminator game will come to PC and consoles – Nacon just said it will arrive “in the distant future”. The lack of any gameplay in the teaser clip suggests that there is still a lot of work to be done.
