China and Australia decided it was ‘time to end the deadlock’

Lowy Institute Senior Fellow Richard McGregor says clearly that both Australia and China – but especially China – decided it was “high time to end the deadlock”.

It comes after Defense Secretary Richard Marles sat on the sidelines of a security summit in Singapore for a discussion with his Chinese counterpart.

Mr Marles and China’s Defense Minister General Wei Fenghe held an hour-long meeting at the Shangri-La Defense Summit in Singapore on Sunday, where each expressed concern over rising tensions over the Indo-Pacific.

Mr McGregor said it was “very interesting” that both countries “had the chance to meet”.

“Obviously, both sides, especially China, I would say, decided it was time to end the deadlock and come together,” McGregor told Sky News Australia.

“However, it is important to remember that there is no change in the fundamental problems in the relationship.

“All that’s happening now is we’re talking about them.”
