COVID-19 shots for children under 5 possible by June 21

TThe Biden administration said on Thursday that children under 5 may be able to receive their first COVID-19 vaccination doses as early as June 21, if federal regulators allow shots for the age group as expected.

Covid-19 White House coordinator Ashish Jha outlined the government’s schedule for the last remaining ineligible age group to get shots. He said the Food and Drug Administration’s external panel of advisors will meet on June 14-15 to evaluate the Pfizer and Moderna shots for younger children. Shipments to doctor’s offices and pediatric care facilities would begin shortly after FDA approval, with the first shots possibly next week.

Jha said states could begin placing orders for pediatric vaccines on Friday, and said the administration has an initial supply of 10 million doses available. He said it could take a few days for vaccines to arrive across the country and vaccine appointments to be widespread.

“Our expectation is that within weeks, any parent who wants their child to be vaccinated can get an appointment,” Jha said.

The timeline would allow parents to have their children fully vaccinated in time for the start of the next school year.

The Biden administration is urging states to prioritize high-volume sites, such as children’s hospitals, and to make appointments available outside of regular working hours to make it easier for parents to get their children vaccinated.

According to the White House, eliminating the last significant cohort not yet eligible for vaccines will go a long way toward building confidence among some Americans who have been wary of returning to many of their pre-pandemic activities. and help the country get out of the crisis. pandemic.

Jha acknowledged the “frustration” of parents of young children who have been waiting for more than a year to record their children.

“Ultimately, we all want to be fast, but we have to do it right,” he said.
