JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colorado (KDVR) — One of two cyclists injured after a driver ran into them over the weekend has been identified by her family as Lisa Ludwig.
The 61-year-old woman was riding her bicycle on US 40 near Interstate 70 Sunday morning. Investigators say a driver in an SUV deliberately hit two of the bicyclists during the ride.
“We had several witnesses who stated that this was an intentional act. It appears that after the driver passed one of the bicyclists, the driver aimed at the bicyclist and accelerated before hitting them,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jenny Fulton.
The car then drove off, still towing a bicycle to the parking lot of the nearby El Rancho restaurant.
“As far as we can tell, there was no traffic accident that led to this or any other form of provocation,” Fulton said.
Two witnesses say the rider came from behind Team Evergreen’s group of cyclists and hit and injured two of the last three riders.
Ludwig was seriously injured. Her family said her condition is now stable but is still unresponsive.
Ludwig’s daughter Jennifer said she is a “passionate cyclist and accomplished athlete, loving wife and mother of two grown children. She is a business and marketing consultant. This is the second time she has been seriously injured in a cycling accident. She had another one in 2014 when another cyclist hit her.”
Another man injured in the crash suffered a broken bone.
Investigators say there is no known link between the suspected driver and the team of cyclists.
