Cyprus investigates charges of blackmailing prison warden

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – Cyprus launched Monday an investigation into allegations by the director of the country’s prisons that a senior police officer recruited a prisoner to collect information or video about her private life that could be used to blackmail her.

Attorney General George Savvides has appointed attorney Achilleas Emilianides to conduct a criminal investigation into charges made by prison chief Anna Aristotelous and her deputy, Athena Demetriou, against the unnamed police officer. Savvides said the investigation will be completed in about a month.

Aristotelous did not specify the possible motives for the unnamed senior police officer to recruit the prisoner, who is serving a long sentence over a drug conviction. She claimed that the officer would communicate with the inmate in the prison via a cell phone.

After her lawyers filed a formal complaint with Savvides, Aristotelous said the senior officer’s actions were aimed “to harm her and, we believe, constitute a blatant act of corruption, especially as it was committed by a member of the Police.”

It’s unclear if the officer has been suspended, but Aristotelous said he was because of the risk he could harm the investigation.

Government spokesman Marios Pelekanos said additional steps will be taken and that “responsibility will be shared” after the investigation is completed.
