Darwin tax collector fends off crocodile with kitchen utensils

A Darwin publican has given a crocodile “an almighty slap in the nose” after the reptile disrupted the pecking order on his island.

The owner of the Goat Island Lodge, Kai Hansen, used a frying pan to whack the saltwater crocodile Fred, which charged at him.

The utensils were enough to fend off the scaly visitor and send them back into the water.

Hansen, also known as “King Kai”, lives on the island with his beloved crocodile Casey.

The reptile entertains visitors on the banks of the Adelaide River.

Tourists have the option to visit the island and dine at a bistro and bar named after the pet.

“My kingdom has the only crocodile-infested moat around it,” he told 9News.

Hansen added that when Fred moved in, Casey started climbing on a walkway near the island’s heliport.

“Now he’s bigger than she is and that’s a problem,” Hansen said.

Hansen said this forced him to pull out his kitchenware shield.

A special crocodile retrieval team was sent to the island to retrieve the reptile.

“Once that happens, Casey won’t come up again and (will) come to her favorite place,” he said Tuesday afternoon.

“And all problems (will) be solved.”
