Diablo IV Won’t Be Like Diablo Immortal, Blizzard Promises

Of Diablo IV back in the news and the largely maligned Diablo Immortal still a topic of conversation, developer Blizzard wants everyone to know that the two games are the same in name only.

Diablo Immortal received a lot of criticism after its June 2 launch for all the reasons mobile games are inherently not fun. By going free-to-play, the only way to Diablo Immortal making money is through microtransactions which are annoying at best and predatory at worst, confirming the worst fears of both for a long time diablo fans and those who don’t want video games preying on people prone to addiction.

That’s probably why, when content creator Gothalion said he “fancy [Diablo IV] to not monetize mobile styleAfter showing up at an Xbox event last Sunday, Adam Fletcher, the leader of Blizzard’s global community, was quick to take the underhanded compliment of distancing the upcoming game from Diablo Immortalits shortcomings.

†[Diablo IV] coming out as a full-price game built solely for PC and console audiences,” Fletcher wrote on Twitter in response to Gothalion’s comment† “The game is huge and there will be tons of content for all players after launch. Paid content is built around optional cosmetic items and eventually full extensions.”

Fletcher uncredited Diablo Immortal by name of course – but come on. We all know what he was talking about, just like we all know what the senior vice president of Blizzard and… diablo CEO Rod Fergusson talked about when he exactly the same thoughts expressed later that day.

†[Diablo IV] is a full-price game built for PC, PlayStation and Xbox audiences,” Fergusson reiterated. “We are committed to delivering an incredible amount of post-launch content for years to come, anchored around optional cosmetic items and full story-driven expansions.”

Listen guys, we get it. The money to earn from Diablo Immortal whales was way too good to pass up and, if I had to guess, the early profits were probably funneled straight into getting Diablo IV ready for the still vague release window of 2023. But with your company’s name already in the trash due to numerous allegations of sexual misconduct, it was… Diablo Immortal really worth all the extra negative attention?

I don’t know. I’m just a simple blogger, but I can imagine it must be a bummer to put up with all this damage control Diablo IVwhich otherwise looks pretty good, because your bosses couldn’t resist stalking a handful of diehard min-maxxers and compulsive gamblers.
