1988 Brownlow medalist Gerard Healy says a full house Marvel Stadium is a better place to watch footy than the MCG.
Marvel Stadium has a capacity of just under 54,000 customers, while the MCG can serve more than 100,000 fans.
Speaking before St Kilda hosted Essendon at the Docklands location on Friday night, Healy suggested that Marvel Stadium is underrated compared to its city location.
“I love Marvel Stadium. I know it’s probably not a popular opinion, but Marvel Stadium with a full house is a better place to watch the game than the MCG in my opinion,” he said. AFL Nation†
“You’re closer to it (the action), the roar of 40,000 people is amazing, you only have to watch the Swans and Carlton match here a few weeks ago (on round 10) to realize we have a great asset here .
“Someone needs to handle the PR (public relations) of this joint because we should have a full house tonight, everyone should be looking forward to coming here and seeing this place and see this place shaking.
“St Kilda vs Essendon, what a great match.”
Carlton’s tight 15 point win over Sydney at the venue on lap 10 drew 44,769 fans.

The rooftop of Marvel is also a draw in the colder months at night, with the AFL stadium providing a more fan-friendly environment all winter long.
The MCC and the Victorian Government are completing a feasibility study this year to renovate the MCG’s Great Southern Stand. The stand was built in 1992 with an expected lifespan of about 40 years, and Healy said that if it were rebuilt, lessons could be learned from Marvel Stadium’s set-up.
“I just think we have this incredible asset (at Marvel Stadium). Last night (Thursday) was a great game in the MCG, but it’s a little, big, big field… it takes 60,000 or 70,000 people and you’re a long way off,” he added.
“I’m not a big fan of cutting down the Great Southern Stand, I think it’s a ridiculous waste of money, but if we’re going to do it, let’s learn from the other stadiums around.
“We need to sit more on the floor rather than sitting that far back at the back of the third and fourth levels (of the MCG).”
