After a wild card entry to Wimbledon last summer, Emma Raducanu took a US Open singles title, unleashing a career storm. “It took me a while to understand what kind of emotions I was feeling,” the 19-year-old explained in a phone call this spring, during a post-workout lull. The British tennis player has a sunny candor as she describes her sudden arrival into the limelight – something of an out-of-body experience. “It was like they were two different people. You see someone else do it, but then you realize it’s you,” she says. “That’s pretty cool, in a way. It gives me the confidence that I can actually achieve those things.”
The past few months have kept Raducanu sharp. Dior Beauty tapped the tennis star for a campaign and she entered Dua Lipa– another phenomenon on the world stage – for an Evian spot. Speaking in March, Raducanu is shaking off an injury fear; now a recent breed of hair is cautiously moving towards Wimbledon 2022, which starts on June 27. But Raducanu has cultivated her way of letting go, including yoga (“I feel like it sets a great tone and washes everything out”) and Epsom salt baths (“a great reward after a hard day’s workout”). Midway through the game, a calming strategy is “to center your breathing,” she adds — a tall order amid full-court sprints. Her daily routine is also an anchor point, from breakfast to face wash.
