The owners of the new Parbery Lane pizza bar in Kingston have a simple philosophy that customers are happy to follow.
‘Come for the pizza, stay for the wine. Or come for the wine and stay for the pizza.”
Either/or, actually, according to owners Nick Jennings and Chris Bennie.
The new vaulted space in the central courtyard of the Foreshore village of Kingsborough has funky new decor and a very imposing pizza oven. It also has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to ensure it’s the hangout for locals and hand-stretched pizza dough lovers.
Their Argentinian Pizzaillo Frankie Almiron makes everything from scratch before throwing it into the Napoli brick-style oven where the magic happens.
Formerly siding with Nick’s coffee company Axis Roasters, the pair decided to take the plunge into setting up a permanent pizza and wine bar after seeing the crowds as they brought some food trucks to the plaza.
Having only been open for a few weeks, they can confirm that the place is packed with new residents from the surrounding apartments and a Friday and Saturday night. But Nick and “Bennie” want Parbery Lane to develop a citywide – and beyond – reputation for excellent pizza.
“We are working on expanding the menu to include meatballs, mac and cheese, charcuterie boards, desserts, all cooked in the handcrafted wood smoker,” says Nick.
They set up an ordering system for the pizza and also a home delivery service.
Pizza combinations include garlic and rosemary, the Fugazzeta of fior di latte, onion, provolone, and oregano, the Diavolo of fior di latte, sopressa, and ground chili, Prosciutto, and Rucula, and the Capricciosa or fior di latte, ham, artichoke, mushroom , black olives and Parmesan cheese – among others.
The different pairings can be washed down with a small but varied wine list that includes MADA, Frederick Stevenson and Alpha Box and Dice.
And of course, coffee aficionados just need to lean into the concrete espresso bar, while a barista uses Axis Roasters beans (which are now roasted in Hume). There is something for everyone.
