GM ramps up Hummer EV production to tackle massive backlog

General Motors has produced just a dozen electric Hummers a day, according to its Detroit plant The Wall Street Journal, which is far from ideal when the automaker has more than 70,000 reservations. As The ride notes that it would take GM 17 years to fulfill all of its orders at that rate. A GM spokesperson told The news, however, that the company’s production will increase sharply in the second half of the year. They said production was slower than usual for the vehicle as it was developed from scratch and built on top of the company’s new Ultium EV platform. The global supply chain shortage affecting the technology and auto industries may have also contributed to the problem.

In the coming months, the automaker expects to be able to make deliveries at a much faster pace, especially after moving away from using outsourced LG battery cells. GM plans to begin manufacturing its own battery cells later this summer at its new Ohio plant, built in partnership with LG. The company has built multiple Ultium plants in the US over the past year, including one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, in addition to its Ohio plant, as part of its effort to reach its goal of producing more than one million electric vehicles in the United States. to make US. each year by the end of 2025. One of his short-term goals, however, is likely to be able to supply the batteries his Hummer EVs need. That battery makes up one third of the vehicle’s weight, The ride says, and is made of materials that are in high demand.

The spokesperson said:

“Our ability to meet that demand will only improve as we vertically integrate battery cell manufacturing. You can expect hundreds of deliveries to grow to thousands later this year.”

GM didn’t give exact numbers, so those at the bottom of the waiting list could be waiting a long time. That said, they’re not the only ones waiting for delivery of their new EVs and hybrids. Ford recently told customers who reserved a hybrid Maverick for 2022 that it is experiencing product delays due to the supply chain shortage and that they can convert their reservation to one for the 2023 model if they wish. The automaker also decided to invest more money and “close orders for all F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E EV models because of the huge demand for them.
