God of War Ragnarok: what is it?

God of War Ragnarok is an action-adventure game with RPG elements, developed by Santa Monica Studio in conjunction with Valkyrie Entertainment. It’s a direct sequel to 2018’s God of War, the PS4 game that revamped the franchise with its Norse mythology setting and other massive changes. Following the exploits of Kratos, a god with a violent past, and his son Atreus, players will venture into an icy, unforgiving landscape and engage in brutal battles, defeat larger-than-life bosses, solve environmental puzzles, and more.

God of War Ragnarok: what is the release date?

God of War Ragnarok will be released on November 9, 2022. This is a worldwide release date, with the game launching physically and digitally everywhere on the same day.

God of War Ragnarok: What Platforms Is It On?

God of War Ragnarok will be available for PS5 and PS4.

God of War Ragnarok: What are the differences between the PS5 and PS4 versions?

God of War Ragnarok will be the exact same core game on both PS5 and PS4. You will experience everything in terms of story, combat and exploration, no matter which console you use to play it. That said, the PS5 version will have some advantages over the PS4 version, due to its increased power and unique features. While not officially confirmed yet, these are likely to include:

  • Shorter loading times
  • Improved visual fidelity
  • Multiple video options so you can choose between a higher frame rate or a higher resolution
  • Haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support on the DualSense controller
  • 3D audio
  • Activity cards and game help

God of War Ragnarok: is there a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5?

No. If you buy God of War Ragnarok on PS4 and want to upgrade to the PS5 version later, that will cost $10 / £10. Alternatively, you can buy the Digital Deluxe Edition or one of the non-standard physical editions to get access to both versions.

God of War Ragnarok: Does it support PS4 to PS5 data transfer?

This has yet to be officially confirmed, but we can assume that God of War Ragnarok will indeed support cross save. Previous Sony games allow players to transfer their saved data from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. These include Ghost of Tsushima, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West. It’s probably safe to say that God of War will follow Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok: Coming to PC?

God of War Ragnarok will be exclusive to PlayStation consoles at launch. However, since Sony has ported its first-party titles to PC, it makes sense that this game will eventually make the leap. It will take a few years or more for this to happen, so PC players will have to wait a while.

God of War Ragnarok: How Much Does It Cost?

While no pricing has been announced for God of War Ragnarok, we can say with certainty that it will be a full-priced game. The standard edition will likely sell for $69.99 / £69.99 on PS5 and $59.99 / £59.99 on PS4.

God of War Ragnarok: What’s the Story?

The story of God of War Ragnarok follows the events of the previous game. Ragnarok, the world war prophesied by the Norse gods, is underway, and Kratos and Atreus must prepare by visiting each of the nine realms. As Atreus tries to figure out who he is and the Asgardian gods look on, the father and son duo make new allies and even more enemies as they try to avoid Ragnarok. However, tensions are running high; Kratos has spent years recovering from his blood-soaked past, while Atreus claims fighting is inevitable.

God of War Ragnarok: Do you have to play previous God of War games to understand the story?

You probably don’t have to worry about playing the Greek-era God of War titles, as the Norse games are quite distant and tell a largely separate story. However, we recommend that you play God of War (2018) if you haven’t already done so before tackling God of War Ragnarok.

While not entirely necessary, playing the final game before the sequel will give you a lot of information and knowledge relevant to Ragnarok. Fortunately, God of War (2018) is quite widely available. The game is available for purchase on PS4 and PC, and is also included in the PS Plus Collection if you have a PS5. Furthermore, the game is part of PS Plus Extra

If you don’t have time to play the previous game for God of War Ragnarok, stay tuned for a full story recap that walks through all the key narrative beats leading up to the sequel. We’ll update this page as it becomes available.

God of War Ragnarok: What is Ragnarok?

In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the name given to a battle so fierce it destroys the world. The gods of Asgard go to war against the giants of Jotunheim. Prophecies say it is inevitable, and will result in the death of many key figures as well as catastrophic natural disasters. In other words, it’s a big problem, and in this game Kratos and Atreus try to avoid it.

God of War Ragnarok: Which Gods and Characters Will You Meet?

God of War Ragnarok takes place in the world of Norse mythology, as established in the last game. In that previous entry, we meet several gods and other notable characters, including:

  • Freya
  • Baldur
  • Magni and Modic
  • Brok and Sindri
  • Mimir
  • Jörmungandr, the World Serpent

Others suggested in the game are Tyr, Thor, and Odin. These three will make their debut in Ragnarok, as will Angrboda and Durlin.

God of War Ragnarok: What New Gameplay Features Are There?

While God of War will play Ragnarok the same way as the previous game, there will be one or two new things to enjoy. The first remarkable thing that comes to mind is riding a wolf-drawn sled to get around the frozen Lake of Nine. Further details on the gameplay are scarce at the moment, but we will update this page when more is announced.

God of War Ragnarok: Was the game shot in one take?

God of War (2018) was quite unique in that the entire game was presented in a single, smooth camera shot that would weave around the action, but never contain a hard cut. God of War Ragnarok has been confirmed to follow this direction, with one continuous shot following the action throughout the game.
