Hasbro recently announced an exciting platform that will be added to the Hasbro Pulse Mobile App this fall. The Hasbro Selfie Series essentially lets you take a picture of your face and have it put on a collector-quality 6-inch action figure featuring costume designs from their top brands, including GI JOE, Ghostbustersmiracle, Power Rangersand Star Wars. This is possible thanks to Hasbro’s own software and a collaboration with Formlabs. If you attend San Diego Comic-Con, you could be one of the first to check out the new Hasbro Self series, and a select few will even be the first to make and buy their figures. Speaking of this new venture, Brian Chapman from Hasbro said:

We are super excited to dive into the world of personalization and customization with Hasbro Selfie Series. We’ve done extensive research to really understand the fan demand for a personalized product, and the team has done a fantastic job making that dream come true. The innovation of this patented technology is truly remarkable and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to add themselves to their collections.

Hasbros For me Crankson added:

Hasbro Selfie Series gives us a new way to interact with the fans. We’re just surfacing when it comes to customization, and we’re excited to see where this new, innovative platform takes us.

I have many thoughts on this. For starters, they don’t mention the cost of this in the press release. That always makes me a little worried. I can 100% see this is Hasbro charging an arm and a leg. Second, I don’t think Hasbro has the best track record with facial sculptures. Sometimes they get it right, but I have the feeling (at least with Power Rangers) usually the faces look a bit (or more, depending on the character). Based on the shared images, these don’t look that much better overall. There are also privacy issues to consider.

All that negativity out there, I think this is really cool too. I know I’ve dreamed of being the Red Ranger since I was about four years old, and this would give me a Red Ranger action figure with my face on it. A plethora of fans will love this for that reason. So many of us have dreamed of being certain characters or in specific roles and this helps fuel that dream a little bit.

What do you think? Is this a nightmare waiting to unfold or something really cool?
