Here are 12 more Steam Next demos you should be playing this weekend

Following on from Ruby’s example, I also jump in to chat a bit about some of my favorite demos from Steam Next Fest.

Steam Next Fest is, of course, a weeklong celebration of games big and small currently in development. Demos and short vertical segments are at the heart of Steam Next Fest, giving players meaningful time with an upcoming crop of indie treasures. We’ve really come full circle and re-emerged into a new era of game demos. We just like to watch.

To help you cut through the noise, we’ve decided to put together a few lists full of games we really like. You can view Ruby’s list here. There are games on this list that bend the genre in ways that tickle me. Some are playing with ideas I haven’t seen before. And there are still others that are reviving genres that I thought were long dead. I’ll keep my descriptions short and sweet so as not to spoil anything, and I’ll add trailers where I can.

By the time you read this, you’ll only have one weekend left to watch one of these Steam Next Fest demos, so let’s get started.

David’s Steam Next Fest Demo Picks

Horror Tycoon

It’s a build your own haunted house simulator mixed with the design fundamentals of a tower defense game. Your goal is to build a maze that scares your gamblers as much as possible before going through the haunted house and exiting the gift shop. Genius. A simple twist on a well-known genre. I’m going to lose hours on this.

Terra Nilic

Terra Nilic is described as an inverted city builder about rebuilding ecosystems. You start with a bare planet and use your wonderful technology to turn it into a lush, green paradise. Once the ecology of the planet flourishes on its own, your challenge will be to pack your base in a way that won’t harm the new environment. Leave no trace, as they say.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die

We’ve officially entered the N64-esque Rare shooter revival era and I couldn’t be happier about it, for example. Agent 64: Spies Never Die is an excellent attempt to recreate the look, feel, sound and gameplay of Rare’s accidental masterpiece GoldenEye 007† I’m not exactly sure what’s going on in this demo in terms of plot, but it doesn’t matter. It’s about instinctively understanding how to play this game. Connect a controller for the full effect. Love it. I can’t wait for more.

Escape Academy

I love escape rooms, so anything that digitally mimics the experience is right on my bucket list. Escape Academy is just that: a digital escape room simulator that you can play alone or with a friend. You are a student of the Escape Academy and you train to become the ultimate Escapist. Each room offers a different kind of challenge, and each faculty member can provide you with new tricks and tools for solving puzzles. I like this stuff. More please.

melatonin

melatonin is a rhythm game about dreams. The hand drawn art and the chill soundtrack combine to create something that is incredibly chill and goes down very easily. Unlike other rhythm games that prefer an on-screen metronome to keep you on the beat, melatonin uses different visual and auditory cues to keep you on the two and four. Smart design and a unique take on the genre.

Brewmaster: Beer Brewing Simulator

An extreme dadcore pitch that makes me smile and nod like that Robert Reford gif. This is literally a brewery simulator. I get to hang out in the garage, blow some boomer tunes and brew a suitcase of crispy boys. Extreme daddy hours on this one, love these vibes.

Metal: Hellsinger

If you’ve read the site this week, you already know how in love with the Metal: Hellsinger demo i am. It’s a rhythm shooter that plays like a love letter to Bethesda’s disaster and adds a little extra flavor of its own. A must for both metal fans and rhythm game fanatics.

Fashion Police Squad

Fashion Police Squad is like a hyper-aggressive version of Tan from Queer Eye got his hands on a gun that could dress people in the blink of an eye. The city is besieged by people in dull suits and boys wearing socks and sandals. This must not remain. Take matters into your own hands and keep your city fashionable.

movie house

I feel like the developers of movie house and I are kindred spirits because apparently we were the only people playing and enjoying Lionhead’s The cinemamovie house is a bit friendlier than Lionhead’s famously difficult studio sim and keeps things relatively simple. The whole point is to read the wishes of your critics and fans and try to make a movie that will please them both. Achieving that goal leads to large monetary gains, which can be paid back in future films.

The mystery cleaner

The mystery cleaner feels like a mash-up of something like clearing guts Detail with an immersive sim in which, in addition to cleaning up, you must use the garbage you find to solve a bigger mystery. I love the genre fusion going on here. It feels like someone is writing an extremely dark one House Flipper fanfic, and I’m excited to see how far the developers can push the concept. I couldn’t find a trailer for this on YouTube, but there is one on the Steam page linked above that you can check out.

VergeWorld

VergeWorld is described as a futuristic combat racer. I would describe it as Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 with PSOne-era graphics. You’ve got a gunship, you’re on rails, all kinds of crazy shit is coming at you and you have to shoot it or dodge it the best you can. It’s fast, it’s fun and it’s full of proc gen levels, so no run is ever quite the same. Extremely here for a flying rail shooter revival.

Out of fashion

Out of fashion is a synthwave racing game full of neon visuals and pounding 80s-inspired electronic music. It’s a pure, impeccable atmosphere and that’s the end of my pitch.
