Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has supported Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella to succeed as he moves to Anfield.
The 37-year-old was commented on Barella’s possible move to the Reds during a conversation with eSports publisher GGrecon, and talked about various aspects, including transfers and streaming.
Johnson was asked for his opinion on Liverpool’s ties to Barella, to which he replied:
“I really think he would be a good addition. It’s not easy to score goals and provide assists, despite the fact that he hasn’t done it in the Premier League. If someone is technically very good and can score regularly or assist, then you don’t expect them to have a hard time. The more players on the field who can contribute to a goal is good for the team.”
Barella has been linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent weeks. The 25-year-old has been one of the cornerstones of Inter Milan’s recent resurgence and has received accolades for his midfield branch.
The Italian made his name at Cagliari, having completed the club’s academy before making his first-team debut in 2015. He was loaned to Inter Milan for the 2019-20 season and made the switch final a year later.
Barella’s time at San Siro has been hugely successful, as he has provided 34 assists in 135 games. He is also a fixture on the international scene, having played 39 times for Italy and was part of the squad that won Euro 2020.
The midfielder’s form has linked him with a departure from Italy, with Liverpool reportedly one of the candidates for his signature.
Naby Keita’s uncertain future in Liverpool could pave the way for Barella’s move
Naby Keita has just one year left on his current contract with Liverpool and his future at the club is up in the air, with a contract extension yet to be signed.
There are reports that the former Leipziger could leave the club this summer. The Merseyside outfit is considering using him as part of the deal to bring Barella to Anfield.
The Guinea international arrived at Anfield with high hopes, but largely failed to deliver. His time at Liverpool has been plagued with injuries and inconsistency and fans of the club have yet to get the best of Keita. He has scored just 11 goals in 116 appearances for the Reds.
If the 27-year-old leaves Anfield this summer, Jurgen Klopp could turn to Barella as a possible midfield replacement.
