Aakash Chopra recently pointed out how Team India stand-in skipper Rishabh Pant often tries to think outside the box while leading a side. He suggested that the keeper may not be the one to set the batting order in the ongoing series against South Africa.
On his YouTube channel, Chopra said it will be Rishabh Pant’s job to make the right bowling changes on the field. He added that when it comes to batting order, head coach Rahul Dravid is likely to be the one in charge.
The cricketer turned commentator thinks the 24-year-old is not like other captains. He highlighted how on several occasions Rishabh Pant had failed to give Kuldeep Yadav his full quota of overs in IPL 2022, despite the spinner doing well in his first three overs.
“Rishabh Pant tries to think outside the box sometimes. We’ve seen him fail to give Kuldeep Yadav his four overs in the IPL, even when he took four wickets from his first three. This hasn’t happened just once, but on several occasions. He’s a different type of captain. As for batting order, I don’t think Rishabh Pant is the one to decide that. Rahul Dravid would do that.”
The Rishabh Pant-led Indian side suffered a 7-wicket loss to South Africa in the T20I series opener in Delhi. After the defeat, many fans questioned Pant’s move not to let Yuvzendra Chahal bowl his four overs in the match.
He added that Hardik Pandya had a significant impact on his comeback outing. Chopra pointed out that the talisman’s all-rounder should be India’s best hitter when a wicket falls after the 10th left, as he has the ability to change the game with his power to turn.
“We missed Hardik Pandya. He’s a firearms player and he showed what he can do. Although he gave up 18 runs from his over, he defeated the batter three times. It was a strange over. Dwaine Pretorius had come out to attack, and he wasn’t afraid to get out.”
“India was able to reach 211 thanks to Hardik’s batting towards the end. He’s coming into a strong base. He’s not that bulky, but the strong base and backlift help him. I think India should steer him when a wicket falls after the 10th over, even if it’s the first wicket.”
Pandya dazzled viewers with his quick knock on the Proteas on Thursday. The swashbuckler, with his unbeaten victory of 31 on 12 deliveries, helped India register an impressive 211 total.
“I don’t think India should make any changes for the second T20I” – Aakash Chopra
While the hosts lost the opening match of the T20I rubber, Chopra believes they should continue with the same starting position for the upcoming match. He noted that he wouldn’t want to make changes after just one game.
The former India Test opener said Arshdeep Singh has been doing well lately but would have to wait for his chance. Chopra suggested that Harshal Patel has performed consistently well and should not be replaced after just one bad match.
“I wouldn’t recommend any changes after just one game unless there’s an injury. Arshdeep has bowled really well and bowls a lot of Yorkers. But Harshal also bowls well, mostly. He was expensive in one over, but even Bhuvneshwar went over for 22. “
“Harshal foxed Pretorius, who hit well with his slower ball. I just feel like he kind of missed his target towards the end. He bowled a lot of short pitches and was taken to the cleaners by Rassie van der Dussen. Arshdeep gets his chance , but I don’t think India should make any changes for the 2nd T20I.”
India and South Africa will compete in the 2nd T20I of the five-game series on Sunday, June 12. The match will be played at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
