Jesse Williams thinks his younger self would say “well done” about his Thom Browne look for the 75th annual Tony Awards

Jbe Williams‘s approach to dressing is both logical and methodical, and for last night’s Tony Awards he leaned on that with a custom tuxedo from the famed American designer. Thom Browne† The actor, who rose to fame in the hit ABC series, Grey’s Anatomy, was nominated for Best Actor in a Play for his role in get me out† (The piece, which was Williams’ first, took the Tony home for the best revival.)

†[Thom Browne] made some really interesting, daring jumps [in] not just who they dress with, but how they dress people over the past few seasons,” Williams said Vanity scholarship. “It seemed like an interesting match because they are a solid institution in terms of a fashion house.” Solid indeed. Known for his modern approach to classic American tailoring, Browne has everyone dressed from LeBron James until Michelle Obamaand has a brand identity that can be seen for miles thanks to the signature red, white and blue tabs that adorn much of his clothing.

For the Tony Awards, Williams chose a tailored cavalry twill tuxedo featuring five ticket pockets, satin lapels, silk suspenders and an Oxford cotton tuxedo shirt. Pebble grain brogue boots with long wings completed the look, which was fitting for an actor nominated for his role as a baseball player.

And Williams’ look for last night — as well as much of what he’s been wearing recently — was largely inspired by New York life over the past few months. He describes the city as his own airstrip and seems to be a bit more expressive lately. “When I Think Of” [my] fashion over the last few months and then before the show, I think when we started this I decided that I’m bringing my personality and the work that I put into it,” he says. “I don’t need the clothes to compete with that. ‘I am the expression, you know? I didn’t want to get too crazy and compete in that sense. I think I approach this with the more mature, forward-looking phase of my life. i wanted the [Tony Awards] look solid and let all the sayings around it be the taste.
