How do you choose top quality hand luggage?
The best carry-on luggage is what suits your travel style. Everyone has individual requirements and there is no one size fits all when it comes to hand luggage. While some prefer the lightest carry-on to take advantage of weight restrictions, others aren’t as concerned and prefer luggage that offers more features, such as dedicated storage areas for laptops or built-in chargers for phones or other devices.
JULY makes several versions of its popular range of high-end travel luggage, and each case features a hard shell design made from German polycarbonate.
This JULY baggage assessment includes the following:
- JULY Stay light
- JULY Keep it up
- JULY Continue Pro
What is a good hand luggage?
Aside from value for money, when comparing hand luggage, we look at how long it lasts. We travel extensively both within Australia and abroad and need bags that are practical and fit for purpose.
The main requirements that we take into account are the following:
- Confirmation that the case is approved for the storage of overhead cabinets on airlines
- Features of the case that make it stand out
- Internal space
- Internal compartments and zipped areas
- Weight of the luggage when empty
- Design with 2 or 4 wheels
- When it’s easy to maneuver
- Hard shell or soft sides
- Building material
- Length of handle:
- closing mechanism
JULY luggage overview of the lightest hand luggage in the world
We start our review of the JULY luggage range with the Carry On Light. This no-nonsense carry-on may not have the features of other luggage in the JULY carry-on range, but what stands out is that it weighs only 1.8 kg empty. Making it the world’s lightest carry-on.
If you want to fly within strict airline weight limits during your trip, you won’t find a suitcase as light as the Carry On Light. It’s the smallest of our JULY luggage review, but still impresses with its strong polycarbonate construction, quality Japanese YKK zippers, integrated TSA lock and dual spinner wheels.
We got the lavender version of this case and while the internal volume of 32 liters is less than others in the review, it’s surprising how much it will hold. The bonus is that it’s so light and super easy to maneuver and load into airline storage compartments.
We took this suitcase as a carry-on while visiting Hobart Tasmania and stayed within our 7kg carry-on limit. The airline we flew with (Jetstar) has a reputation for enforcing weight limits on flights and as the case is so light when empty it meant we could take more on board without worrying about going over the limit .
Overview of the JULY Carry On Light:
- The outside dimensions including the wheels are 54cm high x 36cm wide x 19cm deep
- It has a capacity of up to 32 liters
- The handle is a double rod with multiple stops and is 57 cm extendable
- Sturdy design of hard case made of polycarbonate
- Super smooth to drive thanks to its unique double wheels
- Available in different colors

Step to the next level of hand luggage with the JULY Carry On
Next up on our JULY luggage review is the Carry On. This carry-on is larger, but still falls within the airline-approved size. It has an internal volume of 42 liters and weighs 3.4 kg empty.
A standout feature of this carry-on is the removable power bank with standard USB ports and USB-C port, so you can keep your phones, tablets and other devices charged during those long layovers or at your destination.
It also features a hidden laundry pocket and a unique compression system that fastens with straps to allow more to fit in the bag. The internal nylon lining is water repellent and stain resistant.
We took this carry-on on our trip to Vietnam in 2022 and the built-in power bank came in very handy during our long layover in Singapore. Gone are the days of rummaging through your luggage looking for the charger mounted under the Carry On handle.

Ultimate hand luggage for frequent flyers
The final case of our JULY luggage review is the Carry On Pro. This is our personal favorite and the case that we will take with us on all our future trips. It is also approved by all major airlines for carry-on compliance.
The standout feature of this travel luggage is the removable external cover. The sleeve measures 38 cm x 28 cm and can accommodate a 16 inch laptop. While designed to store a laptop for easy access when traveling, it can also hold documents or whatever you want. The sleeve is padded on the inside to protect your gear and has a zippered storage compartment. The outside of the case also has a zippered section, which would be great for travel documents or passports.
It is securely fastened to the outside of the carry-on with a strong fastening system and can be easily released by lifting the release strap in the zippered area. Obviously a lot of thought has gone into the design of the cover and for those who travel a lot it will be super useful especially when going through airport security zones where you need to remove electronic devices.
The uses for the removable cover are endless and it’s no wonder the Carry On Pro is a best-selling carry-on suitcase.
Other features of the case include the internal compression system, hidden laundry bag and ample storage space with zippered compartments. It also has the removable power bank with USB and USB-C ports.
The Carry On Pro weighs 3.6kg when empty and has the same smooth-gliding dual spinner wheels as the other cases in this JULY luggage review.
