This is not often said, but poor Michael Jordan. The NBA legend was Whitleyed by Kenny Atkinson. Jordan was about to start a new life with Atkinson running his Charlotte Hornets. They fit together just as well as Byron and Whitley in Season 5 of An other worldbut then Dwayne Waynealso known as The Golden State Warriors, stood at the door

With a postseason run that no one outside their organization predicted in the fall, or the end of a regular season ending with Stephen Curry on the sidelines, the Warriors reminded Atkinson of the great times they had together. The Warriors mostly had their way with the Western Conference during the playoffs and then went on to compete against the Boston Celtics for six games in the final, giving him something he never had before. an NBA championship

The Charlotte Hornets never did announced that Atkinson would indeed be their new coach. Unlike the Sacramento Kings, who made official in May that Mike Brown would lead their young, mismatched roster. Suddenly, the chief assistant’s seat was open, but Atkinson had already met Jordan. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski says he is the only head coach candidate Jordan met in person† This is also a much better job than the Kings. Atkinson is said to have been the coach specifically chosen to partner with one of the NBA’s rising stars, LaMelo Ball, who made the NBA All-Star team in his second season. Almost as good a scenario as being married to a recently…elected United States Senator.

However, Curry’s final shooting show and that Larry O’Brien trophy is Dwayne charging that aisle† and the way Whitley ran back to him is the way Atkinson walked back to that job as chief assistant at Warriors. Then there’s Jordan, who sneaks out in the back, dumped at the altar just like Byron.

In An other worldWhitley and Dwayne live happily ever after, but unless Atkinson waits for a 56-year-old Kerr to relinquish the only head coach job he’s ever held after four championships in eight seasons, his career probably won’t end in Golden State. Unless the wounds of that one season Kyrie Irving coaches with the Brooklyn Nets never fully heal.

The Hornets, Jordan and Atkinson seemed like an ideal match. Atkinson is a defensive coach, the Nets improved from second to last in the defensive rating from his first season to ninth in his final season. This is where this exciting, explosive Hornets team needs the most work, especially the 6-foot-7 Ball.

The other two candidates in the running for the lead role of the Hornets were Terry Stotts and Mike D’Antoni. Two coaches who have had great success in the NBA, but are not known for their stingy defense. Not only is it coaching and better play that the Hornets need to improve on that side of the floor, but they also need to make some personnel changes. That will be difficult with the often-injured Gordon Hayward’s $30 million contract for the next two seasons.

A hurt Jordan is probably not the nicest person to be around right now. Bubba Wallace would have a strong finish in Sonoma today, would lift Jordan’s spirits a bit, but knowing what we know about Jordan will make him hold onto Atkinson and deny him for the rest of his life. He won’t just float away quietly like Byron. From now on, Jordan would try to submerge Atkinson every time he sees him in public.

unlike in An other world, it’s a shame this new pair didn’t make it work. Byron and Whitley would have been great together, but that’s not a rewarding experience for the viewers who spent five seasons with the characters. The Hornets and Atkinson really seemed like a perfect match, but in the end he couldn’t quite cut off his old flame. Now Jordan is left to put back the shattered pieces, not from a scripted relationship, but from his off-season plan and draft is due Thursday.
