Logies 2022: Patti Newton recalls a heartwarming conversation with husband Bert Newton before his death

Hours after she gave one nice tribute to her deceased husband Bert Newton at the Logie Awards in 2022, Patti Newton continues to share loving words about the beloved TV icon.

Talk about Today Extra Sharing similar sentiments this morning, Patti asked her to reflect on her life with the iconic personality, especially remembering a conversation they had about mortality.

“Not long before he died, he said to me, you know, ‘Do you think people will remember me?’” Patti told hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell.

As she addressed the crowd, a tear-jerking video montage of Bert played on the screen behind her.

“I actually didn’t think I could do this tonight because it’s still very raw and I’ll never get over it that he’s not there,” she told the audience. “But I know he’s with me. And here… he is in me.’

The widow took the opportunity to reflect on the “courage” of her late husband and the wonderful experiences he had during his career.

“He had something where he would say, ‘Not everyone is living their dream,’ but he did it, and he loved it, he really lived his dream. But the only thing he really loved was this show, the Logies. This was his baby.”

But another important facet of his life was his marriage to Patti, which she referred to in her talk.

“I’ve been his partner for 57 years, it’s a long time,” she said. “He did say to me when we got married, ‘Look, you know, we’ll have some ups and downs, but it’ll never be boring.’ And he was so right, it was never boring.”
