Looking for bridge-to-bridge motivation? We found it at Walter Café?

Waterfront views, mid-century architecture and a delicious menu to match, Walter Café may just be the bridge-to-bridge motivation you need.

Located on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin, the 120 seater serves contemporary Australian cuisine with a relaxed yet upscale cafe atmosphere.

Named after Walter Burley Griffin and designed by Chris Grinham, co-director of award-winning H&E Architects, the interior of the Walter Café features a combination of unique colors and materiality – wood alongside green marble accents and muted copper finishes – highlighting the phenomenal view of Lake Burley Griffin.

Inspired by various elements of the original mid-century architecture and sketches by Marion Mahony Griffin, it’s not just the interiors that combine comfort and opulence.

Chef Matthew Ouwerkerk (who has nearly 15 years of experience cooking in renowned restaurants in Sydney, Melbourne and London), focuses on great coffee and quality food and has planned a menu inspired by local produce.

Think light and fresh breakfast options, including Alaska crab omelet with chili, cilantro, and lemon; ricotta hotcakes with caramelized banana, acacia seed butter, manuka honey, and pecan crumble; and a green bowl of organic grains, edamame, fermented garlic hummus, halloumi, avocado, sauerkraut, cucumber, spinach, and poached egg.

The lunch menu (which is perfect for a long meal on the balcony on a hot day – remember?) consists of small and large plates, burgers, sandwiches and sides, including delicious options such as a 180g Wagyu cheeseburger with maple bacon, lettuce, tomato, burger sauce and pickles; Walter Café Niçoise salad with grilled swordfish or roasted chicken breast and a light curry-spiced chicken with cauliflower cream, roasted heirloom vegetables, pine nuts and currants.

Lovers of sweets can’t miss the sticky date pudding with butterscotch and vanilla or the chocolate cake with espresso mascarpone and raspberries, perfect with tea or coffee.

You can also expect a drinks menu with not only tea, coffee, milkshakes and juice, but also a wide selection of local and imported beer, Italian and French wine and bubbly.

Perfect for a delicious breakfast at Lake Burley Griffin or a leisurely lunch with a wine in hand, Walter looks like your new lake destination. Before or after walk optional.
