Lost Ark player count has skyrocketed, players are blaming Bots

Lost Ark is an undeniable success for Amazon’s publishing house, and has brought the great Korean MMOARPG to the West. But after a wild launch with 1.3 million concurrent players on Steam, it collapsed to a low of about 340,000 concurrent players a short time later. Still high in Steam’s big chart, but a hefty loss nonetheless.

Utilities? Things have changed.

Since that low in early April, Lost Ark has steadily grown its player base over the past two and a half months to the point that it now stands at nearly 900,000 concurrent players. It’s a huge departure from Amazon’s own homegrown MMO, New World, which started out strong with 900,000 players itself but has never stopped falling, now hitting new lows with peaks around 18,000 concurrent players.

Lost Ark is routinely a top game on Steam, often top two or three, in the mix with DOTA 2 and CSGO. So why has it grown like this?

  • Lost Ark was kind of a slam dunk to start with. He’s lived in other regions for years, so he’s been through his growing pains a long time ago. The current Western version is the result of years of built-in success, giving it an advantage over many comparable “live” games that struggle to find their first base.
  • A slight release period of several months may have left players returning to it with not much else to play.
  • The free model, which does have paid purchases in the end, but there is a huge amount of content to experience for free.
  • Lots of new updates including the addition of new continents, quests and subclasses. It was enough to keep players coming back.
  • But in the end, many claim that thousands, tens of thousands, or even possibly hundreds of thousands of these players are bots, so some of these winnings may be illegal. Amazon has already talked about doing widespread botban waves and more are coming soon, so we’ll see what that does to player counts.

Although I left before the current era full of bots, I really liked Lost Ark, because I felt like it scratched my perpetual Diablo itch, a hole that was not filled by Immortal and will only be filled in Diablo 4 a year after now. My only problem with Lost Ark was: time† As an MMO it commands a whole a lot of time even to manage just one character and keep increasing their power. As such, with so many other live games to keep up with as well, I couldn’t continue in the long run. But if I could clone myself, that clone would definitely now be playing and writing about Lost Ark on a regular basis, though the bots might be too tough to bear.

There have been some major drops for Lost Ark in the past few days, but mostly due to server issues and maintenance I think. I really want to see if it goes above a million again because that’s how it seems to be trending right now, and how much will fall if these new bot bans actually go through.
