Marles’ meeting with Chinese counterpart a ‘first small step’

Defense Secretary Richard Marles’ meeting with his Chinese counterpart was a “positive step”, but there is still “a long way to go,” said Michael Wesley, deputy vice chancellor (international) professor at the University of Melbourne.

Mr Marles and China’s Defense Minister General Wei Fenghe recently held a one-hour meeting at the Shangri-La Defense Summit in Singapore, where they each expressed concerns about rising tensions over the Indo-Pacific.

The meeting led to suggestions for a reset in diplomatic relations between the two nations.

“I think you would call it a first small step,” Professor Wesley told Sky News Australia.
