Metal Gear Solid Throwback Revitalizes The “Boomer Sneaking” Genre

unnoticeda stealth action game from Mexican developer Antonio Freyre, breathes new life into the PS1 era Metal Gear Solid sneaking experience.

This article was first published on Kotaku Australia on December 3, 2021. It has been re-timed as a weekend read.

The look and feel of unnoticed perfectly evokes that of MGS, adding a time manipulation mechanism to fast-forward sections where the player waits for guards to complete their patrol loop. The trailer shows a game in which the entire MGS atmosphere with such an eye for detail. The composite camera angles and single-frame snap-to-cover animations. The floating pick-ups with various applications. Guards on tight loops with just low enough awareness that you can navigate around them. Combat rolls used for dodge and offensive maneuvers. Switch button for first person aiming. Over-the-top boss fights.

They even have the tell-tale “?” and “!” warnings, and Snake’s over-the-top death throes in there. As a proof-of-concept it is really beautiful.

Here, see for yourself.

I mean, what more could you want?

When describing the genre, Metal Gear Solid called itself “stealth espionage action”. Freyre calls his game “boomer sneaking.” This is a term that is both very funny and hurts me physically. The name “Boomer” has become a collective term for any game that evokes a specific genre or atmosphere from the early to late 1990s. New Blood is excellent Twilight is a perfect example of the Boomer Shooter wave of games that was inspired by the FPS games of the time.

Here’s the game’s plot synopsis, straight from the Steam page:

“A cell of the revolutionary group calling itself ‘Los Desplazados’, including their leader Gloria, is missing in the Chicxulub Perpetual Energy Station area. Ex-CIMACORP Mexican-American agent ‘Tenoch Kaan’, now a Desplazado himself, is deployed to find Gloria and her team. It is equipped with the latest biotechnological improvements. His mission is to find out what happened to the missing Desplazados without notifying CIMACORP of his presence.”

It’s Mexican Gear Solid. I can’t express how hard that rules. What a time to be alive.

unnoticed has no release date yet. You can wishlist it here on Steam.
