Yrma Lydya, 21, was shot by Jesus Hernandez, 79, in a private room at a Japanese restaurant, police say.
A singer was shot and killed by her elderly husband in a restaurant after trying to divorce him for months, it is alleged.
Yrma Lydya, 21, was gunned down by Jesus Hernandez, 79, in a private room at a Japanese restaurant in Mexico City, police say.
Folk artist Lydya was eating at the venue in the Benito Juarez neighborhood when she was murdered last Thursday, The Sun reported.
The couple became engaged in a row in the private room and Hernandez shot his young wife three times in the chest, it is alleged.
It is also alleged that he and his bodyguard, Benjamin Hernandez, then tried to flee in a luxury car before being snared by police.
Hernandez then tried to bribe agents into letting him go, the claim reports.
The horrific murder came after Lydya contacted a law firm in April about starting divorce proceedings.
She showed pictures of her bruised face from a number of domestic violence incidents as evidence, Mexican newspaper Excelsior reports.
Lydya had also made a report to police in December, alleging that her husband had beaten and threatened her with a gun on another occasion.
Mexico City’s security chief Omar Garcia Harfuch said Hernandez met two people at the restaurant last Thursday at 2 p.m. before leaving around 6 p.m., news network Milenio reports.
Lydya later arrived at the restaurant and gunshots reportedly rang out through the eatery after she and her husband started arguing.
A police officer who was at the restaurant rushed to the private room and stopped Hernandez, a witness told the Primer Impacto news program.
Harfuch confirmed that the singer died after being shot three times to the chest during the altercation.
Hernandez and his bodyguard appeared in court on Sunday and are now held in police custody at a Mexico City jail as police continue the investigation.
The lawyer pleaded not guilty and insisted that he did not kill Lydya, who was due to perform at a concert in California on Saturday.
Hernandez is due to appear in court again on Thursday after his request to be placed under house arrest because of his age was rejected by the judge.
