Migrants found dead in trailer in San Antonio

Saint Anthony: The bodies of 46 dead migrants have been discovered in a trailer in San Antonio, Texas, city officials said in one of the deadliest recent incidents of people smuggling along the US-Mexico border.

A San Antonio Fire Department official said they found “piles of bodies” and no signs of water in the truck, which was found next to the track in a remote area on the southern edge of the city.

Sixteen other people found inside were taken to hospitals due to heat stroke and exhaustion, including four minors, but there were no children among the dead, the department said.

“The patients we saw were hot to the touch, they were suffering from heat stroke, exhaustion,” San Antonio fire chief Charles Hood told a news conference. “It was a refrigerated trailer, but there was no working air-conditioning unit on that rig.”

Temperatures in San Antonio, about 250 kilometers from the Mexican border, rose to 39.4 degrees Celsius outdoors with high humidity.

The city’s police chief William McManus said a person working in a nearby building heard a cry for help and came out to investigate. The worker found the trailer doors partially open and looked inside and found several dead bodies.

McManus said it was the largest incident of its kind in the city and said three people had been taken into custody after the incident, although their involvement was not yet clear.

A spokesman for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the Homeland Security Investigations Division was investigating “an alleged human smuggling operation” in consultation with local law enforcement.
