The American told police that the timepiece was ripped from his wrist just after 2 p.m. Tuesday near the five-star Mercer hotel where he was believed to be staying.

The tourist first complained to the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan Police) and estimated his watch at $800,000 (£685,000). But after conducting their own checks, police reduced the valuation to $45,000 (£36,870), the Catalan newspaper El Periódico reported.

The watch was first identified as a Swiss-made Hublot, with unconfirmed local reports saying it was a Black Caviar Bang, with hundreds of precision-cut black diamonds. The limited-edition Black Caviar Bang has a price tag of $1 million in the United States and takes more than 2,000 hours to complete from the design stage.

However, according to reports, it was later revealed to be a less valuable model, with Hublot making a line of “Bang” watches worth tens of thousands of dollars. After the initial report, the Mossos d’Esquadra Regional Police said they were unable to confirm what type of watch was taken.

“The person who reported it said he was surrounded by a gang of robbers who ripped the watch from his wrist. The reported incident happened around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday. No arrests have been made yet.’

The CCTV footage – released after the police statement – appeared to contradict initial reports, showing only one man robbing the tourist.
