Oprah Winfrey’s Dad Vernon Dead At 88: Instagram Post

Rest in peace. Oprah Winfrey’s father Vernon Winfrey died on July 8, 2022 after a battle with cancer. Oprah revealed that her father passed out in an Instagram video post and honored him in the best possible way.

In the Instagram video, her father was seen at a backyard party and Oprah’s boyfriend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps sang for him. “Vernon Winfrey 1933-2022,” she captioned the post. “Just a week ago, we honored my father in his own backyard. My friend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps greeted him with a song. He FEELED the love and enjoyed it until he couldn’t speak anymore. Yesterday with family around his bed, I had the sacred honor of watching the man responsible for my life take his last breath. Upon his passing, we felt Peace enter the room. That Peace is still there. Everything okay. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts

On July 4, 2022, Oprah posted a video of her and her close friends and family giving her father a surprise barbecue. “So I’ve planned a backyard barbecue that’s actually more than a backyard barbecue, it’s for Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day,” she told her friend Gayle King who was filming Oprah’s video for a banner showing the text “Vernon Winfrey Valuation Day.”

Oprah revealed that the party came as a total surprise to her father when she told Gayle what was going on. “He doesn’t even know this is for him. He thinks it’s a Fourth of July thing that he doesn’t even know is for him. Because my dad is sick and that’s why we wanted all his friends to come and celebrate him while he can receive the joy, so that’s what we do to receive the joy.” She captioned the video: “My dad’s ‘flowers’ while he is still good enough to smell them. Happy July 4th when you get together with your family and friends. Don’t forget to celebrate each other 💐”

In June 2021, Oprah spoke to People about her father while promoting her show Honor our kings, celebrate black fatherhood. †I had a father who took responsibility for me even though he knew I could have been someone else’s child,” she said. “My father and mother never married. They had sex once. After I’m born, he gets a letter saying: ‘Send money. You have a daughter.’ And the reason he did, he said, is because it could have been him. And the responsibility that he took for me, not just a responsibility but care and love and direction and support as a young teenage girl, is the thing that made all the difference in me being who I am now or someone you would never, never have heard of .

She continued: ‘I’ve seen that over and over in my father’s barbershop. Men came in, hard-working men, doing everything they could in their lives to support their families, sometimes two or three jobs to do that,” she continued. “So that’s the story I know of black fathers — the ones I grew up with and the man I know. The story of the absent father, it’s not true that that’s the only photo. That’s what I want to say.”
