Ottawa transit ridership at 50 percent of pre-pandemic levels in May

Passenger numbers on OC Transpo buses and the O-Train were 50 percent from pre-pandemic levels in May as Ottawa’s transit service continues to operate well below normal.

Renee Amilcar, CEO of Transit Services, says 3.6 million passengers used OC Transpo buses and the O-Train last month, compared to 7.2 million trips in May 2019.

The 3.6 million riders in May were well below the budgeted 5.5 million rides.

According to Amilcar’s data, March had the highest monthly passenger volume for the first five months of the year, when transit service was free on the Confederation Line and 15 routes into downtown Ottawa.

In March there were 4.4 million passenger journeys.
