It seems that Blizzard is slowly entering their redemption arc, and they start by removing one of the most hated things in the gaming community, the loot boxes. Given that the loot boxes are one of the best ways to make money, as the loot isn’t guaranteed, it’s kind of surprising that Blizzard is removing them from Overwatch 2. We’d like to ask if you’re wondering what replaces the system, but the article title spoils that a bit.

Seasons and Battle Passes
Frankly, we are quite surprised that Blizzard is picking up one of the best ways to give cosmetics to the players, which is the Battle Pass System that comes in seasons. This will definitely have a big positive impact on the state of Overwatch in the future, and while the system isn’t perfect, as it certainly creates some FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) moments, it will make the game more alive, if players will grind levels on their battle pass to pick up all the cosmetics.
The Battle Pass system is: exchange for new content every nine weekswhich is probably more than enough time for everyone to complete the pass without investing extra money for buying the missing levels (unless that’s the part they turn into the Gacha mechanic).
Another reminder of why Battle Passes are a good thing is due to the fact that Overwatch will be free to play on October 4 when Overwatch 2 is released, along with the first season and with it the first Battle Pass. It is also unknown at this time how much the Battle Pass will cost and whether it will have free progression for free-to-play players.
In-game store
The Battle Pass isn’t the only way players can acquire cosmetics. Instead of, there will also be an in-game store where players can purchase content with real money. We don’t know if the in-game store will have exclusive items or the items from past events, but either way, it’s better than loot boxes with random loot.
Mythical layer skins
Customization is something that everyone appreciates, and Overwatch 2 adds something along those lines. All we have so far is the concept art for a cyberpunk style Genji skin† According to Blizzard, this level of skins will be customizable.
On the other hand, weapons will also have charms that players can toggle on and off for some extra customization.
Even more things with seasons!
There is already one road mapsomewhat of the content that will be released in the coming seasons, and it’s quite fascinating.
