RAMALLAH, West Bank: The Palestinian Authority will hand the bullet that killed prominent Palestinian-American Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to US authorities for forensic examination, a Palestinian official said on Saturday (July 2).

Abu Akleh was killed on May 11 while reporting an Israeli military attack in the Palestinian city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

After an investigation, the Palestinian Authority said she was shot by an Israeli soldier in a “deliberate murder”.

Israel denies the charge and says it is continuing its own investigation. But it says it cannot determine whether she was accidentally shot by an Israeli soldier or by a Palestinian militant during a firefight without examining the bullet to see if it matches an Israeli military rifle.

“We have agreed to turn the bullet over to the Americans for investigation,” Palestinian Authority attorney general Akram al-Khatib told Reuters news agency without providing further details.
