Paramount+ has acquired the rights to the Nicolas Cage-led series adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s novel “Highfire,” which was originally set up on Amazon Prime.
The story, called “True Detective-meets-Pete’s Dragon”, is set in a world where dragons once ruled the earth and Lord Highfire (voiced by Cage) was the king of dragons. Now, however, Highfire is just his cabin in Honey Island Swamp in the Louisiana bayous.
He now goes by the name “Vern” and spends his days hiding among the alligators, watching cable TV (especially “Flashdance”) and drinking obscene amounts of vodka. He is willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means violence, to protect his own skin.
His world soon collides with that of Squib, a teenager embroiled in booze for the local mafia, and their mutual struggle for survival becomes entangled in a highly unlikely friendship.
Cage will also executive produce with Andrew Mittman and Davey Holmes (“Shameless”), with the latter filming the novel for MGM/UA Television.
