Paul Haggis, Oscar-winning filmmaker, arrested in Italy on sexual assault charges

Paul Haggisthe Canadian-born writer, director and producer best known for the Oscar-winning Best Picture Crashwas arrested on Sunday in the southern Italian city of Ostuni. The New York Times reported that the 69-year-old was charged by local police with “aggravated sexual assault and aggravated personal injury”.

The police statement said that after two days of “consensual intercourse”, Haggis took his non-Italian accuser to Brindisi airport “at first light, despite the woman’s precarious physical and psychological condition.” .”

Airport staff saw a woman in a “confused condition” who was brought to the attention of authorities, who then took her to a local hospital. The Time wrote that “she was treated according to a protocol used in Italy for victims of violence against women” and that “she subsequently reported the violence to the police”. Her accusations stated that the well-known filmmaker “could have forced the young woman, whom he had met some time before, to have sexual intercourse.”
