Photo Suggests Kim Kardashian May Have Damaged the Marilyn Monroe Dress She Wore to the Met Gala

New pictures suggest the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress Kim Kardashian wore at the 2022 Met Gala may have suffered damage during the night out.

The Instagram account ‘The Marilyn Monroe Collection’ has been posted before and after pictures of the dress, which Monroe originally wore in 1962 to celebrate “Happy Birthday Mr. President’ to John F. Kennedy and now exhibited in the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum.

“In case you missed it… Missing crystals, and some of them hanging by a thread,” the caption reads.

The side-by-side photos feature a 2010 dress with the back closure seemingly intact, with a series of crystals and neat stitching next to it.

In contrast, a photo taken after the Met Gala in May 2022 shows the back of the dress looking damaged and worn.

Kardashian, who borrowed the dress from Ripley’s, initially didn’t fit the garment and vowed not to change it for the night. Instead, she changed herself, admitting in a red carpet interview that she’d lost 16 pounds (about seven kilograms) to fit in.

This controversial move allowed the reality star to squeeze into the dress, but she couldn’t zip it all the way up, so she draped a scarf over the zipper as she walked the red carpet.

“I tried it and it didn’t suit me,” says 41-year-old Kardashian. told a reporter† “It was such a challenge. It was like a part, I was determined to fit in.”

Once inside the gala, she turned into a replica of the dress, which many critics say should have been done from the start.

Fashion watchdog group Diet Prada has weighed in on the controversial before-and-after photos on Instagram.

“It appears that Marilyn’s iconic ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ dress, which was custom made for the actress in 1962, was damaged after Kim Kardashian wore it to the Met Gala,” the caption reads.

“In new photos of the dress posted by collector Scott Fortner of” @marilynmonroecollectionthe dress, currently on display at Ripley’s, shows rips along the back placket and even missing crystals and sequins, some of which cling to a single thread.”

Outraged Instagram users expressed disappointment in the comments, writing, “So sad that this happened. I can’t believe anyone got to wear this very special historic piece.”

Another wrote: “Now even angrier…how far will a person go to gain fame wearing a historically significant dress…such disrespect…am I surprised? Not really!!!”

Kardashian came to wear the dress after reaching out to Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not’ museum in Orlando. The museum famously bought the dress for $6.7 million in 2016.

Ripley’s staff allowed Kardashian to try on the dress privately, and they learned how to “fake” the dress into the dress for the Met Gala.

Many fashion historians and collectors reacted to the move, expressing concern about the damage Kardashian’s re-dressing of the famous garment would have done.

Marilyn Monroe artifact collector Scott Fortner shared: People that because the dress was designed exclusively for Monroe—to the point where she stood naked with it sewn to her body—it can be inferred that some “stress” was being applied to the dress at the time.

“The dress worn by someone else won’t fit exactly,” Fortner said.

“In this case, Kim Kardashian’s measurements are slightly different than Marilyn’s. It makes sense that the fabric and seams were tense.”
