CHICAGO (AP) – A 5-month-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in the back of a car in a neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
The baby, who was identified as Cecilia Thoma, was hit in the head Friday night when shots were fired from another vehicle in the South Shore neighborhood, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Cecilia was taken to a hospital where she later died.
A 41-year-old man in another vehicle was in good condition at a hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound near his eye, Chicago police said.
No arrests have been made.
The baby is one of the youngest victims of gun violence in Chicago. She would have turned 6 months old in four days, according to Natalia Derevyanny, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Emergency response officer Andrew Holmes, who spoke to Cecilia’s mother, expressed anger at the gunman, saying “You should sleep at night” and urging the person to turn himself in.
“You just took this baby’s life. This baby was a baby, this baby did nothing to you,” he said.
Activist Ja’Mal Green offered a $5,000 reward for information after the shooting.
