Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, said he wanted to offer customers more choice and flexibility and announced an innovative new feature that allows customers to provide their own baggage handler on flights where they want their baggage to arrive at their final destination.
Joyce stressed that the feature is not mandatory and passengers can still choose to drop their luggage on the route if they wish. “It’s about choice. We’re hearing from more and more customers that they want their luggage to go on vacation, so we’re offering them the option for just $39.95 extra.”
He said airlines were always adapting to changing consumer needs. “We’ve scaled down meals to accommodate people who don’t like food, we’ve allowed people to bring their own entertainment equipment instead of providing it themselves. This is no different.”
Under the plan, customers can choose between a ‘Classic Fare’, where your luggage is left at the airport for free – or the ‘BYO Baggage Handler Fare’, which means you take care of your own staff.
If successful, Qantas will consider expanding the program to include BYO flight attendants and pilots.
