Riverdale star Ryan Grantham reportedly killed mother to avoid seeing him try to kill Justin Trudeau

Riverdale star Ryan Grantham is currently on trial for murdering his mother, which he allegedly did to prevent her from seeing him try to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Grantham, 24, played Jeffery Augustine on the CW series and has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite. He was initially charged with first degree murder.

According to multiple media outlets, the court heard that Grantham was considering killing others, and had printed a map of Trudeau’s Ottawa residence, Rideau Cottage, and allegedly planned to kill the Prime Minister.

According to an agreed statement of fact, Grantham told police at the time: “I was in a hurry and he was the only person I could think of, the most important person in Canada. I could do something to impress.”

Barbara, the court heard, was playing the piano when her son shot and killed her on March 31, 2020.

British Columbia prosecutors said at the sentencing this week that Grantham “wanted to save his parent” from an attempt to kill Trudeau.

“My mother was a caring, compassionate and loving person,” Grantham told the British Columbia Supreme Court this week.

“She didn’t do anything to deserve what I did to her.

“Given something so terrible it seems almost pointless to say sorry. But from every fiber of my being I am sorry.”

According to the Canadian news channel CBCAfter Grantham allegedly killed his mother by shooting her in the back of the head, he covered her body with a sheet and placed candles and rosaries around her.

Prosecutors, however, said Grantham was acting with “something other than altruism”.

Prosecutor Michaela Donnelly said at the hearing, “Mr. Grantham was trying to save his mother from something he was about to do.”

Donnelly described the murder as a “devastating breach of trust.”

“Barbara Waite loved her son dearly, was an excellent parent and she said she had no reason to be afraid of him,” said Donnelly.

According to CBC, Grantham recorded a video of him quietly approaching his mother with a gun from behind prior to the alleged shooting, using a GoPro.

The prosecution also presented two psychiatric evaluations to the court, which concluded that Grantham allegedly killed his mother to prevent her from witnessing further acts of violence.

The sentencing hearings for Grantham ended on Wednesday local time, but the judge has yet to discuss a jail term, although prosecutors have asked for Grantham to serve at least 17 to 18 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

Grantham also starred in iZombieThe life of a loserand The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus in addition to Riverdale
